New Arrivals 9/23/14 to 9/29/14

by Alexander "Johnny Two-Dice" Smith

We have found that most games with camels are really fun, and Five Tribes is no exception to this rule. Victory points can be gained by selling goods, unleashing Djinns, controlling areas, and bringing Viziers and Elder meeples to your side. The modular board and turn order bidding mechanic means that no two games of plotting the path of meeples in the desert will ever be the same. An interesting take on the worker placement genre, Five Tribes is a blast!

Respect is everything in this town, and respect is the name of the game in Nothing Personal. With the old Capo on his way out, you have the unique opportunity to put people under your thumb and put the mob under your control. Placing the most influence chips on gangsters isn't the only way to make sure you come out on top, gangsters can be put in and sprung from jail or intimidated. They can even meet with an unfortunate end if their loyalties lie elsewhere. Negotiation, blackmail, and violence are all tools in your arsenal as you and your family climb to the top.

Sure to catch on in a's Smash Up: Monster Smash! Vampires, Werewolves, Mad Scientists and Giant Ants all join the fray in this spooky expansion. Will you bring Vampires to the table and drain the life out of your opponents (can Vampires suck blood from Robots?) or will you run with the pack and howl with the werewolves? If you love Smash Up and want more, then Smash Up: Monster Smash is a perfect addition to your collection, just in time for Halloween.

Lost Legacy: Flying Garden can be played as an expansion to Lost Legacy: The Spaceship or as a stand-alone game. Use logic and deduction to track the legendary Lost Legacy card. Eliminate others and find the Lost Legacy in this quick game by game designer Seiji Kanai, creator of Love Letter. We really like them played together.

The newest expansion for the popular trading card game Magic: the Gathering is out and it is a doozy. There is something for everyone; thematic 'wedge' clans, powerful reprints of in-demand cards, and an incredibly skill-testing limited format. Explore the rich lore of Tarkir as Sarkhan Vol and Sorin Markov meet the powerful Khans of Tarkir.

If you've ever attended a family function then you're probably familiar with charades. The awkward pantomimes, the frantic gestures...but what if there were points for style? Dance Charades is a great opportunity to show off your moves as you try to convey the answer to your teammates through dance. Maybe you're able to perfectly convey the card, but if you can't groove with the beat you'll be left behind in this active twist on a party classic.

We also have some really cool games back in stock this week. Concept, Ultimate Werewolf Deluxe Edition, Balderdash, Pictionary and Skull are all back in stock. These are some amazing party games, so look no further if you're looking for an interesting take on charades, a dynamic and streamlined version of Werewolf, or a gorgeous bluffing/push your luck game. We also have more copies of Stratego and Mastermind in different shapes and sizes as well as a new Doctor Who themed Mad Libs.

New demos added to our game library this week include: Five Tribes, Nothing Personal, Skull

New Arrivals 9/9/14 to 9/22/14

by Alexander "Quickdraw" Smith

Based on the 1998 trading card game, Deadlands: Doomtown, Doomtown: Reloaded is finally here. Play different groups such as members of a sinister carnival, lawmen, outlaws, and more as you try to gain control of Gomorrah, California. Stack your deck and build winning poker hands of cards as you collect deeds and and shootouts at high noon. Customize your deck of 52 cards with Hexes, Dudes, Deeds, Gadgets, and more but be careful! If you're caught with cards of the same suit and rank, (say two kings of hearts) you'll be called out for cheatin'!

Step right up, come one, come all! Try your hand at Carnival! Complete different rides in Carnival and keep your opponents from completing theirs with the clever use of tickets that manipulate the game. Need to change a number on a die? Spend a ticket. Want to mess up someone else's roll? Spend a ticket! Who knew that competing to build carnivals could be so spiteful? Carefully managing your supply of tickets to finish your rides and stopping others from completing theirs is key in this game of collecting cards and rolling dice.

Fulfill your lifelong dream of being a trucker in the American Midwest in The Great Heartland Hauling Co.! Well, maybe you haven't always dreamed of being a trucker, but goshdarnit, now's the time to try! Drive fast and manage your freight cleverly and be the king of transport. No two games will be the same, so even if you think you've got the perfect routes you'll have to navigate a new map next game!

Not to be confused with Hearts, Spades, or even Clubs, Diamonds is a trick taking game where you are trying to collect as many acrylic diamond crystals as possible by taking and losing tricks. When you take a trick or are unable to follow suit, you'll take a suit action based on which suit of card you played. Move diamond crystals from the reserve to your showroom or secure vault. Its all in how you play your cards as you earn, steal and protect your diamonds in this card game like no other.

In the latest expansion for the popular Android: Netrunner, First Contact, you'll find new Mythic Ice, deadly traps and new regions on the moon. A code gate with a cost and strength equal to the size of your hand, an asset that will rez ice for free, and a brand new Anarch identity that can break barriers for free are all new things you can find on the moon colony in First Contact.

Think that members of the monarchy can't hack and slash like the rest of em? Prince Charmless might take issue with that! Add new wacky cards befitting equally wacky royalty and the fables you find them in with Munchkin: Princesses! Glass Sneakers, Genetically Modified Apples, and the Eighth Dwarf await you on your magical journey in the realm of Munchkin fairytale!

What could be more splendid than a magnificent feast filled with drink, music, art, nobility and murder? The banquet attendees are divided into two groups; those who wish to murder the king and....those who want to murder the king. Yes, everyone wants this monarch dead, but in order to win, yours must be the plot that cut short his life. Play with up to 25 banquet guests in tons of different scenarios where you're trying to advance your group's own nefarious agendas and not get caught by others.

The city of New York needs a mayor and it might as well be you. Gerrymander, bribe and build to bring in new residents and bolster your approval rating in City Hall. You're not the only one with your eyes on the highest public office in this great city though, your political opponents will be exerting their influence to shut down your plans at every turn. By taking different offices such as Tax Assessor, Zoning Board and Surveyor, you'll be able to perform different actions and gain influence to manipulate the system. Sometimes relenting control of an office so that you have a later advantage is key in this game of planning and politics.

Think you're the brainiest in you group of friends? Play in teams or individuals as you take turns answering questions from different categories to earn points in MindTrap. What do you think a clue like 'Aged Aged Aged' would mean? Go on, take a guess.

Would you believe the answer is 'middle aged'? Filled with short murder mysteries, logic puzzles, and trick questions, you'll be scratching your head in this fun brain-bending puzzle game.

Have you ever seen a Rhinotatula? How about a Plataphantstrich? If you haven't, you've clearly never played a game of Creature Clash! Create wacky new animals by combining the head, body, and back of different animals and send them into the fray against other equally silly and ferocious creatures. Don't put all your eggs (does a cross between an ostrich and a koala even lay eggs?) in one basket though because you'll need to win five fights and if you use all the best parts early on, you'll only have weak parts later. Great for kids and adults alike, math, strategy and creativity are essential if you want to win in Creature Clash!

Make 7 is a quick, fun, Connect Four inspired game for two players trying to make a combination adding up to seven with their tiles. With strategic planning and math skills, you will have to try to prevent your opponent from reaching seven by blocking them off while trying to get seven yourself. A great game for strategic thinking and basic math, Make 7 is sure to be a hit!

You won't be able to put down the seemingly simple Flexi-Sphere as it constantly reveals new shapes. This ornate wreath of silver wire and glass beads is a perfect toy for someone who likes to keep their hands occupied or as a fun and beautiful addition to an office desk.

This week we have the tile-sliding maze game, Labyrinth back in stock as well as the Reiner Knizia classic, Ra. If you're looking to navigate an ever-changing maze filled with magical creatures and treasures or get in a bidding war in ancient Egypt, we've got you covered! Also back in stock this week are some of our all time favorites. Build sets of colored fireworks without being able to look at your own hand in Hanabi or try your hand at balancing residential and industrial areas in Suburbia.

by Alexander "Troll Decker" Smith

Being a Shadowrunner is a tough job, but the credits are good when you're making runs for high profile clients doing everything from corporate espionage to finding components for the neighborhood shaman. A cooperative deckbuilding game for 2-4 players, Shadowrun: Crossfire will toss you and your companions in a world of high-tech fantasy where you're just as likely to find a elf CEO as an ork who builds killbots. Believe me chummer, you'll need all the guns, spells, connections and street savvy to survive this world of technology and magic.

Fans of Pathfinder: Rise of the Runelords will be pleasantly surprised with some returning faces but there is still plenty of surprise in store. Shuffle up and get adventurin', matey!

Smash Up is a game all about shoving different factions together, but with all the expansions that have come out, shoving all your decks in a shoe box has really been the only way to keep everything together up until now. For Pirate Ninjas and Plant Shapeshifters looking for something a bit more elegant to hold all your cards, Smash Up: The Big Geeky Box is for you! With space and dividers for all the current factions and space for more, this is THE storage solution for your Smash Up needs. Oh, did I mention that Wil Wheaton and his faction, 'Geeks', are in this box? Well, they are, and it's awesome.

Just in time for Talk like a Pirate Day, on September 19, we received not just one, but TWO pirate themed games this week. Navigate the seas and strike the delicate balance between plundering merchant ships with your pirates and sinking pirates with your Navy in Black Fleet. There are many ways to earn doubloons, but between the merchant, pirate and Navy ships under your control, you'll make the seas your own and spend your hard-earned (or hard-stolen) cash to buy upgrades for your ships. Make enough money and you'll be able to pay off the ransom for the governor's daughter and win! Strategy, treachery and the cool Caribbean breeze await you in Black Fleet! This one was broken out for the first time at last night's Board Game Night to rave reviews.

Use your wits and battle prowess in the latest Duel Decks, Duel Decks: Speed vs. Cunning! On the blazing steppe you must take what is yours through terror and strike fear into those who would oppose you and your clan. Face off between the quick and brutal Mardu Hordes and the wise disciples of the Jeskai Way. With many cool new cards and some old favorites, be sure not to miss these cool pre-constructed decks!

Tally ho, and onward to world domination from lofty heights in Zeppelin Attack! You're not the only megalomaniac in the skies, you'll have to square off against other zeppelins such as the nefarious 'Death's Head' or the strange 'Pineal.' Attack and defend with crazy power-ups such as a maniac mercenary monkey mechanic or boarding torpedoes! Be the criminal overlord you've always dreamed of being and crush your foes beneath your heel in Zeppelin Attack! Don't miss picking up this fun, quick game from our friends at local game company, Evil Hat Publishers.

Push your luck as you venture into the Bermuda Quadrangle to find the sunken treasure near the volcanic island Habanabi in Plucky Pilots. Players will roll custom dice sticks to navigate from island to island, but as they fly further towards the volcano, they will have less fuel to press on. Will you try to make it all the way to the volcanic island or play it safe with the gold that has washed up on the neighboring islands? Embark on your risky flight and grab all the treasure you can in this great introduction to "push your luck" style games! This has already been a big hit with the kids we've tried it with.

Make your own pirate stories and fairy tales by rolling wooden dice for plot points and elements and filling the story with your own imagination with Magic & Fairy-tale Dice and Pirate Adventure Dice! Nine wooden dice, six sides each...that's 46,656 different combinations! Not to mention that you can have the same faces showing and make totally different stories depending on order or how you want to connect the elements of the story. One story's sun could be another story's magical transformation, so there are near infinite tales to tell with these nifty dice.

Does a head plus a thunder cloud equal "brainstorm" or "weatherman?" Try to decipher the words or phrases being conveyed through symbols on dominoes in Word Dominoes! Score points by making correct guesses or by getting people to guess your word...but be careful, if it's too obvious and everyone guesses it right, you'll lose out on points. You'll be surprised at the number of different combinations you can make with 84 different images and mixed interpretations. We played this yesterday at our Capitol Hill Village game day, and everyone seemed to enjoy it a lot. It is better with more players.

Making your own games is a great way to spend an afternoon...and once you're done you get to play it! DIY Board Games has everything you need to personalize classic games like Ludo, Backgammon, Snakes and Ladders, Draughts and more. With tons of stickers, dice, boards and counters, you'll have a blast making beautiful games for the whole family to enjoy!

We have a lot of exciting things back in stock this week! Steam Park, Quantum and Star Realms have all been big hits and now that we have them back in stock, now is the time to grab them before they're gone again. We've really enjoyed building rides and attractions in Steam Park, but Quantum is back as well, so now you can become a master of the universe by exploiting probability itself! Toss the dice and run out your fleet in your quest for Quantum Cubes in this fun strategy game. Star Realms has been rocketing off the shelves lately, and it's no surprise given all the critical acclaim for this Magic: the Gathering pro-player designed deckbuilding game.

New demos added to our game library this week include: Word Dominoes, Plucky Pilots, Black Fleet, Hexago Continuo
