New Arrivals 7/22/2016

By Alexander "Can Tell Dirigibles and Blimps Apart" Smith

Mystic Vale is a deck building game for 2-4 players where you modify the cards as you play! Throughout the game, you will purchase transparent plastic inserts that you will slide into one of your sleeved cards, adding new abilities to that card. We've come across some really powerful combinations in the games we've played, and we're looking forward to discovering more!

Dead Last is a game of social collusion by local game designer Matt Grosso. 6-12 players will eliminate each other over multiple rounds by voting who to remove...and if you didn't side with the popular vote, you're also out. Now that we have copies on the game, I'm looking forward to lots of secret communication and shifting allegiances during game night.

Build your own steampunk airship in Dastardly Dirigibles! Players will assemble their dirigible by all laying down the same part of the ship onto their board. The player who can get the most parts of the same suit onto their airship will score the most points.

Skiwampus is a fast-paced matching game where players have to quickly match the corners of their cards to form sets and cover the circle it makes by placing a goal chip over it. Think fast and complete the most goals to win this challenging matching game.

Balance Beans is a clever balancing puzzle where you must add colorful beans to an uneven platform and get it to balance. This is a great introduction to puzzle games before moving up to other games by ThinkFun like Rush Hour or Gravity Maze.

Geometry Strategy feels sort of like Chess or Stratego, but with a twist that can shake up the game by changing how powerful your pieces are at a moment's notice. The object of the game is simple: guide your sphere to the center and use your pieces to knock out other players...but when you enter the red zone, the strength of each of the different pieces change which can lead to some astounding upsets.

The Perplexus Q-Bot is a new three dimensional puzzle where you have to guide a ball though the maze by moving the maze itself. The small size of this Perplexus makes it easy to transport, making it a great game on the go.

The newest Magic: the Gathering set, Eldritch Moon is here! We have booster packs, fat packs, and intro decks for sale, so if you're looking for some new cool cards from the plane of Innistrad, now's your chance!

The new expansion for Android: Netrunner is here! 23 Seconds is the first in the new Flashpoint cycle and offers new cards for both Corporations and Runners.

The Pokémon Break Evolution Box: Ho-Oh and Lugia is filled with awesome new legendary cards and powerful BREAK evolutions. This set includes Ho-Oh BREAK, Wobuffet BREAK Ho-Oh, and Lugia as well as an oversized Ho-Oh BREAK and five booster packs.

New Arrivals 7/8/2016

by Alexander "Miniature Siege" Smith

Kaboom might just be the best tactile game we've played so far. Ever since we played this castle building, catapult firing game, we've been hooked. There's something beautiful about building as many structures as you can while up to four other players launch wooden cubes in an effort to topple your buildings. The game does a very good job of making both sides fun to play, and created a remarkably balanced one-versus-many game that I'm sure we'll be playing more of.

Crazy Karts is a wacky team-based cart race for 3-8 players. Each team selects actions in secret which help them turn, accelerate, grab items or possibly cause them to spiral out of control when their actions conflict with each other. Different factions give teams different ways to experience the game, making this crazy race incredibly replayable.

Return to Warwick Mansion and to solve more mysteries in the Mysterium: Hidden Signs expansion. New characters, places, objects, and visions add a new level of challenge to this game of intuition and observation. Our psychic powers have revealed to us that if you love Mysterium, you'll love this expansion.

The Iconic Washington DC Coloring Book isn't just a a great way to color all of your favorite monuments and museums of the nation's capitol, it's also a set of beautiful postcards! Yes, you can tear out the thick paper, slap on a stamp and write you your loved ones with postcards you colored yourself. We're still reeling by what an amazing idea this is, and we think that it's one of the best D.C. themed gifts you could get.

By Alexander "Wooden Stones" Smith

Imhotep is one of the three games nominated this year for the prestigious Spiel des Jahres award. In this light strategy game for 2-4 player, you must collect stone, ferry the stone on boats, and play action cards all in an effort to assemble monuments and score points. Kathleen played it this last Thursday for boardgame night, and she loved it and is looking forward to playing the advanced version.

Nobody wants to be the one to take out the trash, and in Garbage Day, avoiding this dreaded chore is the name of the game. Players hide garbage cards in their room or stack cards on top of the garbage can. If you cause the pile to come tumbling down, you have to take it. A steady hand is key to getting rid of your trash. This dexterity game plays 2-5 players, but really shines when you have a full group of five.

Kittens in a Blender is a card game for 2-4 players where your goal is to save your kittens from being put into a blender. Players can play cards to protect their own kittens or remove all the kittens currently in the blender from the game. The gameplay is fun, fast, and interesting.

Star Trek: Frontiers is a Star Trek themed re-implementation of the Mage Knight board game by famous game designer, Vlaada Chvátil. 1-4 players can take command of ships, explore a modular board, and defeat hostile alien ships in this Star Trek filled strategy game.

The Metagame is a party game that is can play actually six games in one. Debate whose culture card is the best fit for an opinion card, play a speed matching game, arrange cards into 'quilts' of cards that share commonalities and more! We played this game at the store with all the employees, and I swept the competition, so I am very excited about this game.

The Voting Game is an interesting take on a classic game where everyone must vote on who they think would best fit a description, and then one person has to guess who said what. Learn more about what your friends think about you in this interesting party game for up to 12 players.

Brain Games: the Game takes the popular National Geographic Channel's Brain Games and puts the brain-bending excitement right in your home. Compete with friends and family in topics such as Logic, Language, and Vision to prove you're the brainiest of the bunch.

Imperial Veterans includes specially painted models of classic Imperial ships along with new pilots, upgrades and maneuvers to your Star Wars: X-Wing game. Bolster the strength of your Imperial squadron with the best of the best in this new expansion, and discover new strategies available to you with the new tools at your disposal.

If you play Star Wars:X-Wing and are looking for a neat way to distinguish your TIE Fighters from your friend's, you're in luck! We now have colored replacement stands in a variety of colors. We have red, orange, green, blue and purple stands, and they look fantastic.

We've also received a cool new magnetic fridge puzzle of Washington, D.C.! We've had fridge puzzles for Chicago, New York, Paris, and London in the past, and now the company that makes them has our very own Washington, D.C.

New demos: The Metagame, the Voting Game, Braingames: the Game, and Imhotep.
