New Arrivals 10/28/2016

By Alexander "Totally Bogus" Smith

Colony is a dice-based development game for 1-4 players. Players must roll dice and use the resources provided by the different faces to construct buildings and score points. The dice as a resource mechanic is pretty cool and the fact that only some of the resources can be carried over adds interesting choices for players.

Star Trek: Ascendancy is an exploration and civilization development game for 3 players looking to boldly go where no gamer has gone before. As you travel the universe, you will discover new locations where you will have to overcome obstacles and gather resources. Because the board grows as you play, no two games will be the same. This game is packed with fifty years of Star Trek history, making it perfect for any Trekkie.

Bill & Ted's Excellent Boardgame is a card game for 2-4 most-righteous players. Travel through time grabbing famous people from history to score points on your History final. Definitely a great game for those who loved the movies, but also a fun way to spark interest in history. Wyld Stallions rule!

Safe Breaker is a 3-6 player logic and deduction game where your objective is to correctly guess the color-number combination of each opponent. Start by asking others if they have at least one part of a certain color-number combination, and when you've narrowed down the options you can try to eliminate them with a correct guess. If you like games like Hanabi, but want something a bit more competitive, Safe Breaker is for you.

Stockpile: Continuing Corruption is the expansion pack to perhaps the only stockmarket game Kathleen actually likes. This expansion brings four new additions: forecast dice, bonds, new investors, and commodities & taxes. If you enjoyed playing with the alternate rules included in the base game, the extra variants included in this expansion will be a real treat.

Star Wars X-Wing: Heroes of the Resistance is the new set of Rebel ships for Star Wars X-Wing. Bring the fight to the Empire with the the Millennium Falcon and Poe Dameron's T-70 X-Wing as well as new pilots and upgrades!

We have a TON of new Pokémon products in this week! For big boxes, we have the new Pokémon Mega Gyarados Collection, Dragonite EX Box, and Mega Beedrill EX Premium Series. If you're looking for something smaller, we have the sets of three booster packs that come with pins featuring Zoroark, Mega Alakazam, and Mega Swampert.

New demos: Mystic Vale: Vale of Magic, Betrayal at House on the Hill: Widow's Walk, Odd Man Out, Stratego, Dicey Goblins, Potion Explosion

New Arrivals 10/21/2016

By Alexander "Sea Train" Smith

Ticket to Ride: Rails & Sails is a new version of Ticket to Ride, one of the best gateway games out there. In this version, not only will you connect cities via railroads, you will also cross oceans with ships. Choosing which cards to take is very important; if you skimp on ships you might find yourself unable to construct the harbors needed to connect cities on different continents. Like the original Ticket to Ride, this game plays 2-5 players and is quite easy to teach to new gamers.

Five Tribes: Thieves of Naquala is an expansion that adds more cutthroat elements to your game of Five Tribes. In addition to the powerful djinn cards, there are now thieves that will steal resources from your opponents and let you pick one to keep. If you're looking for a way to make Five Tribes a bit more interactive, this is a great addition to the game.

King of New York: Power Up! is an expansion that adds a new playable monster and gives each of the monster characters special skills to spice up your rampage in the Big Apple. Even better than that, this expansion also includes special power tiles that allow you to use King of Tokyo monsters in King of New York and vice-versa, which is a great bonus for players who own both games.

Mystic Vale: Vale of Magic is the new expansion for our favorite modular card drafting game. This expansion adds new cards to the game that care about when a vale or advancement card is purchased, opening up new avenues of strategy. If you've liked Mystic Vale as much as we have, this is a solid addition to the base game.

The counter and demo area of our new expansion is absolutely covered in Squigz and Mini Squigz. The suction cups on these technicolored rubber shapes stick to flat surfaces and each other. You can make all sorts of interesting structures with these guys, and we've already had some people use them to represent molecules!

The OombeeCube is perhaps the best shape sorting cube we've ever seen. One of the biggest problems with learning toys like this is that pieces often go missing, but the OombeeCube never has this problem. The soft rubber shapes are tethered to the cube with string so that no shape ever goes astray!

New Arrivals 10/19/2016

By Alexander "Viking Tetris" Smith

Now that we have the new space from our store expansion, we have so much room for new games! Check out all the cool things we've recently added!

SeaFall is the long awaited legacy game of seafaring and exploration by Rob Daviau of Risk: Legacy and Pandemic: Legacy fame. Rob came down to WashingCon this year to demo the game, and everyone was incredibly excited. Of course, to get the full effect of the game you'll want to play multiple times with your group of 3-5 players because decisions made in one game will have repercussions in games to come.

Ameritocracy just might be the perfect game for election season in Washington, D.C. 24 players create a campaign strategy using cards and then use those cards to recruit staff, make headlines, and win votes. Even if you're not a fan of politics, you should give this game a try  it just might awaken the campaigner in you.

Fate of Akalon: Tribes is a game that we heard about a while back when the designer visited us and asked us to playtest it. 2-4 players each take a deck of cards that represents a fantasy tribe and dukes it out in a free for all battle. Clever use of special abilities will tilt the fight in your favor as you try to defeat thirty points worth of creatures before your opponents can.

A Feast for Odin is a heavy tile laying euro game for 1-4 players. Designed by Uwe Rosenberg, this game has a lot of similarities to other games by the designer such as Caverna and Patchwork. At its core, this is a worker placement game where you must also fill areas with oddly shaped tiles. One thing I have to say about this game is there is a lot going on and I thought it would be hard to follow, but they do a very good job at making sure the actions and phases are easy to understand.

Oceanos is a drafting game where 25 players explore the deep in their submarines, collect treasure and upgrade their ships. We had a couple of people try it out on our Thursday Game Night, and it was a huge hit.

Poo: The Card Game is a fast card game that will have 2-8 players flinging poo at each other. You could always clean yourself off, but you'll need to make sure your opponents don't stay clean in order to win. If you have a group of friends who enjoy toilet humor, Poo is for you!

StoryLine: Scary Tales is something we've been waiting for ever since we first played the original StoryLine. Just in time for Halloween, 3-8 players will be able to make spooky stories of their own by choosing their favorite words to fill in the blanks.

Betrayal at House on the Hill: Widow's Walk is the expansion we've been waiting years for. With new monsters, items, rooms, and haunts, this expansion is just what was needed to revitalize one of our favorite games just in time for Halloween.

This month's Pokémon Mythical Collection: Kaldeo features a legendary unicorn Pokémon! Complete with a promo card, pin, and two Generations booster packs, this set is a wonderful way to add to your collection or give as a gift.

With Labyrinth's new expansion, we've had the space to expand our selection of roleplaying games. We've added Downfall, Epyllion: A Dragon Epic, Bookhounds of London, Urban Shadows, Baby Bestiary Handbook Vol. 1, Trail of Cthulhu, Burning Wheel Codex, Monsters and Other Childish Things, 7th Sea Core, and Dreamhounds of Paris to our RPG library. If you've been looking for some new and exciting new systems, check some of these out!

New Arrivals 10/4/2016

By Alexander "Undetonated Feline" Smith

Pandemic: Reign of Cthulhu is a new version of Pandemic, but instead of curing diseases, you're quashing cults, sealing portals, and holding on to your sanity. Like the original Pandemic, this is a cooperative game for 2-4 players, meaning you'll all have to work together to defeat the Old Ones that threaten the world.

Cry Havoc is an asymmetric, science fiction war game for 2-4 players. Each player chooses a faction and tries to vanquish their enemies. The miniatures in this game are really cool and I'm excited to send them all into battle.

Royals is a territory control game for 2-5 players. Take on the role of head of a 17th century noble house and expand your influence throughout Europe. Players who can consolidate their power will receive extra bonuses, and skilled diplomats will be able to broker deals and curry favor with their friends.

Mobi is like Bananagrams, but for math. 1-6 players take a handful of numbers and operations tiles and arrange them in a crossword fashion. This is an excellent way for young players to get familiar with basic mathematics, or for older players to craftily use their tiles as quickly as they can. I've personally never been excited about doing math problems until now.

We played Vikings on Board at Washingcon, and we absolutely loved it! 2-4 players load supplies to ships, wager on which clan will control the most vessels, and divvy up the supplies based on who placed the most clan shields on the boat. There is lots of room for trickery and turnabouts, making this game a blast to play.

Lotus is a beautiful card game in which you must collect sets of cards to create flowers. Each flower needs a different number of cards, and both the player who completed the flower and the player who played the majority of those cards will receive points. Completing a flower also grants special powers, so the game evolves as you play it. This is a great one for 2-4 players.

Resistor is a two player strategy card game where where two players try to create circuits between their central processing unit and the opponent's. Swap, flip, and add cards to the line to create an unbroken pathway of your color to score a point. There's a lot of strategy to this game, and being able to adapt to your opponent and foil their plans is especially helpful.

People have been asking us about Exploding Kittens ever since it came out, but now we finally have it in the store! Players draw cards from the deck until they draw the exploding kitten card, and then they're out...unless they play a card to save themselves. Skip your draw, look at the next few cards or defuse the kitten to live another day in this wacky party game for 2-5 players.

DrunkQuest is a fantasy drinking game for 3-6 adults. Players gather treasure and fight monsters by taking drinks or using special item cards to make others drink in their stead. You might never have thought that drinking games and dungeon crawls would have something in common, but they do, and it's called DrunkQuest.

Kaladesh, the newest Magic: the Gathering set, is here! We have booster packs, Deck Builder's Toolkits, sleeves, deck boxes, playmats, and the new Bundles and Planeswalker Decks! Planeswalker decks are new preconstructed decks that revolve around an exclusive planeswalker card. There are lots of really cool new cards, so be sure to check it out.
