Important Restocks and New Games 01/24/20

Check out what's new at Labyrinth as well as these great games we just got back in stock!

Pokemon Alolan Sandlash GX Box

This new GX comes with a really cool ability that has some great potential combos. This particular Sandlash has an ability called, "Spiky Shield," which allows the Sandlash to place damage counters on the Pokemon that attacks it while it is active. These damage counters get placed even if the Sandlash is K.O.'d in the process. The Sandlash's GX attack, "Spiky Storm," then allows the Sandlash to deal 100 damage to each Pokemon with a damage counter on it, though benched Pokemon don't have weakness and resistance applied to them when the attack hits.

Oceans Deluxe KS Edition

Oceans KS Deluxe Edition comes with foil promo cards, card sleeves, a 5-6 player expansion, acrylic fish tokens, and cloth food bags. This game is in a similar vein to Evolution (its predecessor), but it is more concerned with keeping balance in the ecosystem. For instance, there is a chance your species may even overpopulate and cause problems because of overpopulation.

Expedition to Newdale

Expedition to Newdale is the new Oh my Goods! game from renowned designer Alexander Pfister. In this board game adaption of the successful card game, 1 to 4 players from 12 and up compete in different chapters to experience the world of the Longsdale kingdom once again. The story of Expedition to Newdale starts about five years after the events from Oh my Goods! Escape to Canyon Brook, but you don’t need to know the prequels at all. Each chapter of the game lasts about 90 minutes which adds up to around 12 hours of exciting campaign gameplay. And when you found your favorite chapter while playing the campaign, you can always come back and play it again to have even more fun!

Wavelength is a social guessing game in which two teams compete to read each other's minds. Teams take turns rotating a dial to where they think a hidden bullseye is located on a spectrum. One of the players on your team — the Psychic — knows exactly where the bullseye is, and draws a card with a pair of binaries on it (such as: Job - Career, Rough - Smooth, Fantasy - Sci-Fi, Sad Song - Happy Song, etc). The Psychic must then provide a clue that is *conceptually* where the bullseye is located between those two binaries. For example, if the card this round is HOT-COLD and the bullseye is slightly to the "cold" side of the center, the Psychic needs to give a clue somewhere in that region. Perhaps "salad"? After the Psychic gives their clue, their team discusses where they think the bullseye is located and turns the dial to that location on that spectrum. The closer to the center of the bullseye the team guess, the more points they score!

Underwater Cities: New Discoveries

New Discoveries, the first expansion to the wildly popular game, Underwater Cities, will offer many new challenges to players who own the original game. This will be a 'must-have' expansion for customers who own the game! New asymmetric assistants and starting resource cards help speed up the game. The Museum of Underwater Artifacts board offers enticing treasures and new Metropolises provide even more variability from game to game.

The Expanse (The Board Game)

While not new, The Expanse board game is now at Labyrinth. The Expanse, a board game based on the Syfy television series of the same name, focuses on politics, conquest and intrigue similar to the board game Twilight Struggle, although with a shorter playing time. The card-driven game uses key images from the show, along with action points and events that allow players to move and place "Fleets" and "Influence."

Welcome to Arzium, land of ancient civilizations, bizarre creatures, unexplained wonders, and vibrant characters. A great sleeping sickness has spread across the land, sending every type of creature to wander for hundreds of miles in a dazed, incoherent march. It’s your job to seek them out and wake them from their sleep, recruiting them to help you find even more lost souls! Roam is a pool-building and area control style game for two to four players by tried-and-tested designer, Ryan Laukat.

Usborne Travel Activities

There are a bunch of new Usborne travel activity cards that each come with a set of challenge and puzzle activities on dry-erase cards as well as a dry-erase marker with which to fill them out.

A wonderful first board game for kids that was created specifically for you and your two year old. Kids love getting to move about while playing a game!

What's New at Labyrinth 01/10/2020! Also, Some of My New Favorite Games

Check out what's new to Labyrinth this week!

Fox in the Forest Duet

Fox in the Forest Duet is a new cooperative, trick-taking game by Renegade Games in which two players work together to collect all the gems without running out of time or getting lost. Like in many trick-taking games, each round a player will either win or lose the trick, but the result of the tricks played will effect how certain tokens and markers move around the forest. During the round players cannot reveal their cards, they cannot ask revealing questions, and they cannot discuss strategy (i.e., they can't discuss who should win the trick and what suit they are going to play). It is an interesting take on the trick-taking genre and it has a solid fairy tale theme and gorgeous art.

Astronomy Fluxx

Astronomy Fluxx is now out at Labyrinth. For all you Fluxx enthusiasts and astronomy enthusiasts, this fun, rule-changing game might just be for you.

Caylus 1303

A classic game is back! As one of the first worker placement games, Caylus stands among the true board game classics of the 2000s. The original designers' team, together with the Space Cowboys, have now created a revamped version! The mechanisms of Caylus 1303 have been streamlined and modernized for an intense and shorter game. Don't be fooled, though, as the game has kept both its depth and ease of play while a lot of new features have been added, including: variability of the starting position for a virtual infinity of possibilities; no more pre-set strategies; characters with special abilities, with a wavering loyalty, offer their services to the players; and of course, brand new graphics. The King calls you again, so it's time to go back to Caylus!

Unlock: Exotic Adventures

Unlock: Exotic Adventures includes three new adventures for players to engage with. Those three new adventures include: "The Night of the Boogeyman," "Scheherazade's Last Tale," and "Expedition Challenger." If you are a fan of the Unlock! series or the Escape the Room series, then you should come check this one out.

Barrage is an interesting worker placement game for 1-4 players, in which each player takes on the role of a company attempting to provide hydroelectric in a 1920s to 1930s dystopia where fossil fuel usage has been used to its limits. The game involves elements of route-building as well as action drafting. A couple key mechanics that make the game unique are the Construction Wheel, which must be used wisely, as it is where players' available actions are stored, and the shared water represented on the board. Players must compete for control of the water and attempt to intercept the water flow before other players to harness its potential.

Res Arcana: Lux et Tenebrae

Res Arcana: Lux et Tenebrae adds 4 new Places of Power, 12 artifacts, 4 mages, 4 monuments, and 2 magic items to Res Arcana. It also extends the game to five players, adds scaling rules for fewer players, and introduces two new things: scrolls and demons.

Lord of the Rings: The City of Ulfast

The City of Ulfast is the second Adventure Pack in the Vengeance of Mordor cycle for The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game! This 60 card pack contains an entirely new scenario for players to continue the adventures they started in the A Shadow in the East deluxe expansion and the Wrath and Ruin  Adventure Pack, as well as new cards to help players deal with these challenges.

A Game of Thrones: The Things We Do for Love

A new age of A Game of Thrones: The Card Game begins with the The Things We Do for Love! This expansion contains 88 cards that draw on the game’s rich history as both a CCG and LCG, bringing powerful and iconic cards from earlier eras of the game’s life to the second edition of the A Game of Thrones LCG. Whether it be the return of iconic characters like Mad King Aerys, or fan-favorite locations and plots, players will find plenty to be excited about.

Arkham Horror: Dark Side of the Moon

Dark Side of the Moon is Scenario 3–A of The Dream-Quest campaign for Arkham Horror: The Card Game. This scenario can be played on its own in Standalone Mode or combined with the other expansions in The Dream- Eaters cycle to form a larger four or eight-part campaign.

Significant Restocks

Watergate is finally back! This popular two-player-only game is sure to entertain anyone who enjoys a little history with their gaming.

Game Color

We have received a huge restock of many of our Game Colors and Game Inks, so if you're looking to paint up some of your miniatures, then swing by to check out which colors and effects are now back in stock.

One of my personal favorite cooperative games is back in stock after the holiday rush. If you'd like to know more about Ravine, then swing by and check it out. Several of our staffers really enjoy this one and are happy to talk about it.

Oh My Goods!

The popular hand-management, economic, card game, Oh My Goods! is back in stock!

Haven is another beautiful game by Ryan Laukat that is made specifically for the two-player-only genre. While not a new game per se, Haven is now at Labyrinth and we're pretty psyched about it. It is an asymmetrical game that takes around 45 minutes to play. One player takes control of the City's forces, as they seek to invade and conquer the Forest. Meanwhile, the other player takes control of the Forest's inhabitants, attempting to defend their home from the City.

My New Personal Favorites

Era: Medieval Age

I recently picked up a copy and played Era: Medieval Age with my significant other and found it to be a delightful, well-made dice-pool, roll-and-build game. In the game players are given a starting pool of dice and a privacy screen which they must roll their dice behind. That privacy screen contains a chart with all the building types, their costs, and their grid layout available in front of the player. The screen also contains a list of possible disasters that can take place in the city players are building. When players roll their dice behind the screen, they have two chances to re-roll as many or as few dice as they wish, except for any dice that land on skulls. Skulls cannot be rerolled and will result in a disaster at a later point in the round; however, skulls can either result in disaster for the player's own board or, depending on the number of skulls, for their opponent's board, so skulls can be used strategically. Players use a grid board with peg holes to build their cityscape and keep track of resources as well as negative points resulting from skulls. The game also actually took 45 minutes, as advertised. My significant other and I had a blast playing with these beautiful pieces, tetrising them into place and trying to score as many points as possible by fully enclosing our city. Matt Leacock (the game's creator) has made other really good games as well. Other titles Leacock is known for are Space Escape (another favorite of mine) and the hugely popular, Pandemic

Nanty Narking

Nanty Narking is another game I recently added to my collection, as it is a reprint and retheme of a game I have wanted for forever. The original theme of the game was Terry Pratchett's Discworld: Ankh Morpork. While they lost the IP rights for that version of the game, they reprinted it with a new theme that is equally fun. Nanty Narking is a game in which players are randomly dealt an identity with a specific victory condition. The identities are all characters from the works of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Charles Dickens, and players are given a chart that lets them know what the victory conditions for every possible character are, so that part of the game is trying to figure out your opponent's identity in order to better thwart their plans while advancing your own. Nanty Narking's mechanics are very simple in that players, on their turn, play down a card of their choice from their hand. Each card may contain various symbols that allow players to place new agents in the city, assassinate enemy agents, gain money, build a building, or even play a second card. In my first play through with my significant other, I was Lord Bellinger and he was Moriarty. Suffice it to say that Moriarty got away with his evil plans, but we both had a blast playing so it was overall a great experience. This is a game by Martin Wallace, who is also known for his work on the Brass series.

Some Things You May Have Missed During the Holiday Rush

Terraforming Mars: Turmoil

Terraforming Mars: Turmoil includes new corporations, new projects, and a new type of cards — Global Events, from dust storms to riots to rising alloy demand — that give you something to plan for 3 generations in advance. At the heart of this is the political arena of the Terraforming Committee. A new action allows players to add delegates to different parties, the first delegate each generation being free, and additional ones costing 5 MC. Neutral delegates are added by the global events, representing the wishes and trends of society. When a player(even the neutral player) has more delegates in a party than any other player, that player takes over the party leader seat for that party, and when a party has more delegates than any other party, it becomes dominant. The dominant party will become ruling during the next generation, imposing its one-time bonus, its ongoing policy, and granting chairmanship for its party leader, awarding that player 1 terraform rating.

Witchburner RPG

Witchburner is an interesting RPG in which players take on the role of witchfinders attempting to find and burn the witch or witches in the town.

Pokemon: Meowth V-Max

Meowth is known as a persistent little Pokémon, a teensy bit grumpy, and loaded with tricks and schemes. Now make it gigantic and power it up as a Pokémon VMAX, and all of Meowth's big dreams get a little closer to coming true! You get both Meowth V and Meowth VMAX in this special collection, making this the first opportunity to get your hands on the amazing new Pokémon V and Pokémon VMAX cards. You also get an oversize foil card of Meowth VMAX—a suitably sized card for a Pokémon of Meowth's stature. There's even a selection of Pokémon TCG booster packs to add to your collection. See if you can make the Scratch Cat Pokémon's plans pay off with the Pokémon TCG: Meowth VMAX Special Collection.

Klask is a fun, air-hockey-like game in which two players take control of their magnetic pieces, moving their piece with the bottom half underneath the board. Players attempt to hit the ball into their opponent's goal, while trying to block their opponent's attempts to do the same. It is super fun and the components are really high quality. This one is definitely a new favorite.

Battle Line Medieval

This is a newly re-themed version of a Reiner Knizia classic, Battle Line. The new theme is Medieval and this comes with 60 new cards with new art by Roland MacDonald, as well as ten full-color tactics cards. It is a great small war game for two.

Dungeon Doggies

All doggos are good doggos, and these ones are no different. These Dungeons & Dragons-themed dog miniatures come with a code and instructions for downloading a digital story module to go along with them. They also each have a different D&D class assigned to them.

The Extraordinary Adventures of Baron Munchausen

This not-quite-a-role-playing-game requires players to sit around telling fantastic (but completely true!) stories. Players may attempt to trip up another player's story by wagering a token ("But the Prussian Army had dissolved by that time, m'lord, so you could not have possibly fought it single-handedly"), whereas the storyteller must counter with another token (and an excuse) or swallow their pride and incorporate it into their story (with another excuse). There are also a few, minor details, mostly used to get boring storytellers to stop. The game is won after each player has told one story. Each player, in turn, gives *all* their tokens to another player they believe has told the best story--so collecting the most tokens doesn't make you the winner, it makes you be able to choose the winner. Of course, the best story-telling wins the game. It is considered one of the best RPGs to play while drinking wine with friends and, while not new, is certainly noteworthy.

We currently have a copy of the Dragon Age RPG rulebook, and it is gorgeous. If you're a fan of the video games or extended universe, then you should definitely check this out. It has great lore as well as some awesome designs.

Sand Timers!

Sand timers are now in stock at Labyrinth. We have both 1 minute and 3 minute timers that are great for anyone workshopping a game with a time-based mechanic or for anyone who needs a sand-timer replaced.

Colors of Paris

You are a painter in Colors of Paris, and you've decided to participate in "Bateau Lavoir", a friendly competition between several painters in a workshop in Montmartre, Paris. The newspapers know about this challenge, so perhaps this is a good opportunity to become famous, following the path of Cézanne, Toulouse-Lautrec, Monet, or Renoir...Colors of Paris is a management game in which you must take care of your paint tubes, mixtures, and time to create works, all the while anticipating others to perform as needed within a rotating set of actions.

The Castles of Burgundy 20th Anniversary Ed.

This is the 20th Anniversary Edition of the game. This edition of The Castles of Burgundy includes eight expansions, seven of which were previously released as promotional items and one new to this release.
